Signs your garage door motor is about to fail
Motors rarely die with a polite calendar invite. They grind, hesitate, and then pick a Saturday morning. Here is what to notice first.

A garage door motor not working is usually the last chapter, not the first. Before that you get noise, slow travel, remotes that only work if you lean out the window, and a door that stops halfway like it has better plans. Catch it early and you might service it. Ignore it and you are googling same-day repair on a school morning.
Warning signs worth a call
- New grinding, screaming, or loud bangs that were not there last month
- The door crawls, hesitates, or reverses for no obvious reason
- Remotes only work from the bumper, or one remote is dead while others still go
- The motor runs but the door barely moves
- It works on power but not after a outage, even with backup fitted
- You smell hot electronics or the unit is too hot to sit near after one cycle
Is it the motor, or the door?
Sometimes the opener is innocent. Broken springs, dirty tracks, or a door off its rollers make a healthy motor sound like it is dying. That is why we diagnose both. See garage door repair if the panels or springs are the obvious problem, and garage door motors if the opener is the suspect.
When it is "just" the remote
Garage door remote not working is one of the highest-frequency jobs for a reason. Flat batteries, lost programming, or a tired receiver. We programme remotes and extra handsets without pretending you need a whole new motor — unless you do.
When to call today
- You cannot get the car in or out
- The door is stuck open and the house is not secure
- The door is hanging, crooked, or off the tracks
That is emergency garage door repair territory. We offer same-day repairs across Cape Town's Northern Suburbs, including Durbanville, Bellville, Brackenfell, Kuils River, Kraaifontein, Goodwood, Parow, and Monte Vista.
Can I keep using a noisy motor until it dies?
You can. It will pick the worst morning. Noise and slow travel are cheaper to inspect now than a locked-out Saturday.
How much does a failing motor cost to fix?
It depends on repair vs replace. We wrote how much garage door motor repair costs in Cape Town without fake prices — what drives the quote, and when a new unit is smarter.
